While platform capitalism concentrates data and power in the hands of a few tech giants, data cooperatives offer an alternative rooted in the social economy: organizations owned by their members and democratically governed by them, which pool their data for mutual benefit while retaining control over it. This report, produced for Triadi by Federico Bartolomucci and Alberto Nuzzo, in collaboration with Diesis Network, traces the evolution of the concept, starting from its principles and the regulatory context (the Data Governance Act, the GDPR) through to a practical business model, and concludes with concrete examples: from MIDATA and Salus.coop in the healthcare sector, to JoinData in agriculture, POSMO in mobility, and Pescadata among artisanal fishing communities in Latin America. It is a useful resource for anyone wishing to assess whether a data cooperative could work in their own context.
